Comparison
GEO vs SEO: what's the difference, and do you need both?
GEO optimises brand visibility in AI-generated answers. SEO optimises for ranking in search results pages. They target fundamentally different systems — and you almost certainly need both.
Two disciplines, two different systems
SEO has been the bedrock of digital visibility for over two decades. It focuses on earning higher positions in search results — primarily Google — through on-page content, backlinks, site speed and algorithmic alignment. Success means your page appears when someone types a query.
GEO operates in a different environment. When a user asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, DeepSeek or Google's AI Overview a question, the AI does not return a list of links. It generates an answer. That answer may mention your brand, recommend a competitor, or ignore your category entirely.
The critical distinction: SEO optimises for algorithms that rank content. GEO optimises for models that synthesise content. Structurally different challenges, requiring different strategies, signals and measurement.
Side by side
Side by side
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | Rank higher in search engine results pages | Be cited, mentioned and recommended in AI-generated answers |
| How it works | Optimise pages for crawlers and ranking algorithms | Build entity authority and structured knowledge models can retrieve and synthesise |
| Key signals | Backlinks, keywords, page speed, technical health | Entity consistency, cross-platform citations, structured data, topical authority |
| Success metrics | Rankings, organic traffic, click-through rate | AI mention rate, citation accuracy, sentiment, share of voice in answers |
| User experience | User clicks a link and visits your site | User receives an answer including your brand and may never visit |
| Content format | Web pages, blog posts, landing pages | Structured data, knowledge graphs, authoritative content across platforms |
| Platform scope | Primarily Google, plus Bing and Yahoo | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, Ernie, Google AIO and more |
| Language | Optimise per language and locale for Google | Each platform has its own language biases; Chinese platforms need a dedicated strategy |
| Speed of results | Weeks to months for ranking improvements | Variable — depends on training cycles and retrieval freshness |
| Cost structure | Content creation, link building, technical audits | Monitoring tools, cross-platform content strategy, entity management, ongoing optimisation |
Can SEO and GEO work together?
Absolutely, and they should. These are complementary layers of a modern visibility strategy, not competing disciplines.
Strong SEO provides a foundation for GEO. Search engines remain a primary source that models reference when generating answers, so content that ranks well and is structured clearly is likelier to be encountered and cited. Good technical SEO — clean markup, fast loading, mobile-friendly design — also supports the crawlability that underpins AI retrieval.
But GEO needs capabilities beyond traditional SEO. Entity authority matters more than keyword targeting. Structured data helps models understand what your content is about, not merely that it exists. Cross-platform consistency — your brand information aligned across Wikipedia, directories, social platforms and your own site — directly influences how models represent you.
Treat SEO as the foundation and GEO as the layer above it.
Urgency
When to prioritise GEO
Both matter, but four conditions make GEO urgent rather than eventual.
- Your audience already uses AI assistants to research
- If buyers ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for recommendations rather than searching Google, SEO alone will not reach them. The shift is fastest in professional services, technology, finance and B2B.
- You operate in APAC or multilingual markets
- Chinese platforms — DeepSeek, Kimi, Ernie — grow rapidly and operate independently of Google's ecosystem. SEO does not address them at all. GEO is the only route to visibility there.
- You are in a high-consideration category
- Insurance, financial services, travel, healthcare and B2B technology see disproportionate AI usage, because users want synthesised comparative answers — exactly what these systems are good at.
- Competitors already appear in AI answers and you do not
- If a prospect asks for the best companies in your category and your competitors are named but you are not, that is not a future problem. It is a current one.
Does ranking first on Google mean AI will recommend you?
No. This is one of the most dangerous assumptions in digital marketing today.
A brand can rank first on Google for a keyword and be entirely absent from ChatGPT's response to the same query. We see it regularly in monitoring work: brands with dominant search positions that simply do not exist in AI-generated answers.
The reason is structural. Google ranks pages on backlinks, keyword relevance and site authority. Models generate answers from training data, retrieval sources, entity recognition and cross-platform citation patterns. These overlap in places and diverge sharply in others.
A brand with heavy SEO investment but weak entity presence, inconsistent cross-platform information or thin structured data may rank beautifully and remain invisible to AI. The reverse is also true.
Where Google AI Overviews fit
Google AI Overviews — previously Search Generative Experience — are AI-generated summaries at the top of Google results for certain queries, synthesising multiple sources into a conversational answer.
Because AIO operates inside Google's ecosystem and draws primarily on Google's index, traditional SEO signals do influence whether your content is referenced. In that sense AIO sits at the intersection of SEO and GEO.
But it is one platform among many. ChatGPT, Perplexity, DeepSeek, Gemini outside Search, Kimi and Ernie all generate answers using their own models and retrieval. A brand optimising only for Google AIO is addressing a fraction of the AI discovery landscape.
Frequently asked questions about GEO and SEO
What is GEO?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimising your brand's visibility, accuracy and positioning within AI-generated answers across platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, DeepSeek, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.
What is SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of improving a website's visibility in search engine results pages through on-page optimisation, technical improvements, content creation and link building. It primarily targets Google's ranking algorithm.
Which AI platforms matter for GEO?
The major platforms are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini and AI Overviews, DeepSeek, Claude, Kimi and Baidu Ernie. For brands targeting APAC, the Chinese platforms are essential and need a dedicated strategy rather than a translated one — which is why Tocanan measures both ecosystems in one frame.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO complements SEO rather than replacing it. Search engines remain important and strong SEO provides a foundation for GEO. But as AI-powered discovery grows, brands investing only in SEO will miss an increasingly significant channel.
Can my SEO agency handle GEO?
Most SEO agencies lack the tools, methodology and platform expertise for effective GEO — particularly across Chinese platforms. GEO requires AI monitoring, cross-platform analysis, entity management and an understanding of how models select and synthesise information. These are different skills. Tocanan is a specialist GEO firm operating a builder-operator model: we develop the monitoring infrastructure and run the optimisation workflows in-house rather than reselling a third-party dashboard.
How do I measure GEO performance?
Key metrics are AI mention rate, citation accuracy, sentiment of AI-generated brand mentions, share of voice against competitors, and platform coverage breadth. Tocanan tracks these as a single AI Generative Visibility Rating (AIGVR), measured per engine, per market and per language rather than as one blended score.
How quickly do GEO results appear?
It varies by platform. Some use real-time retrieval and can reflect changes within days or weeks. Others rely on periodic model updates that may take months. A complete strategy addresses both retrieval-based and training-based visibility.
Is GEO worth the investment compared to SEO?
If your audience uses AI tools for research and decisions — and that audience is growing quickly — then GEO is not optional. The question is not whether GEO beats SEO, but whether you can afford to be invisible in the channel capturing an increasing share of discovery.
What is Google AIO?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summary answers displayed at the top of Google results, synthesising multiple sources into a conversational response. AIO is one component of AI-powered discovery; full GEO addresses all platforms.
Do I need both GEO and SEO?
Yes. SEO ensures you are visible in traditional search results. GEO ensures you are visible in AI-generated answers. Together they cover how people discover brands today, and how they will increasingly discover them.
