China & Xiaohongshu
Xiaohongshu, and why it decides what Chinese AI says about you
Xiaohongshu is where Chinese consumers research before they buy — and it is one of the sources Chinese AI engines draw on when they answer. Presence there is not only social marketing; it is part of your AI visibility.
The connection most brands miss
Xiaohongshu is usually treated as a social channel: post, engage, work with KOLs, measure engagement. All of that is real. But it misses what makes XHS strategically different from Instagram or TikTok.
Chinese AI engines cite the Chinese web. Kimi draws on Zhihu, WeChat and Chinese-language sources. DeepSeek and Doubao are trained and retrieved against a corpus in which Xiaohongshu is a substantial and heavily-indexed part of how products are discussed. When a Chinese consumer asks an AI assistant which sunscreen, which hotel, which clinic — the answer is synthesised partly from that conversation.
So an absent or thin XHS presence is not just a missed social channel. It is a gap in the source material an engine has to work with when it decides whether to mention you at all — in exactly the market where Western GEO tooling cannot see anything.
The platform
How the platform actually works
- A research platform, not a broadcast one
- Users arrive with intent to evaluate. Posts are read as peer recommendation rather than advertising, which is why authenticity outperforms production value and why an over-polished brand account underperforms a credible one.
- Search behaves like a search engine
- A large share of XHS activity is deliberate search rather than feed browsing. That makes discoverability a function of title, tags and topical consistency — closer to SEO than to social posting.
- Personal versus business accounts
- Business accounts unlock commerce features, analytics and paid tools but carry different content expectations. Personal-style accounts read as more authentic and often see stronger organic engagement. The choice follows your objective, not your size.
- 種草 — 'planting grass'
- The native term for seeding desire before a purchase decision exists. It is the same awareness-to-action journey Western marketers know, but with the evaluation stage happening publicly and in a form other people search later — which is precisely what makes it citable.
Positioning
Four positioning strategies
Which one fits depends on what you sell and how the decision gets made.
- Product-launch focused
- Best for professional or functional products where features carry the decision. Content concentrates on demonstration and comparison.
- Brand IP creation
- Suits approachable, personality-led brands. Builds a recognisable voice or character that accumulates followers independent of any one product.
- Brand image building
- Fits high-end fashion, beauty and accessories, where aesthetic consistency matters more than feature detail.
- Sales conversion focused
- For brands targeting direct purchase, with content built around the path from post to cart rather than around awareness.
Content
What gets found, and what gets read
- Titles do the discovery work
- Numbers, a conversational register and a genuine emotional hook. Because so much traffic is search-driven, the title functions as both headline and query match.
- Timing follows the audience, not the clock
- Engagement concentrates around commuting, lunch and late evening, and differs between weekday and weekend. Publish, measure, adjust — general advice is a starting hypothesis, not an answer.
- Click-through rate is the first diagnostic
- Impressions without clicks means the title or cover image is failing, not the content. Fix discovery before rewriting the post.
- Predicting reach before publishing
- Likes, views and comments move in fairly stable ratios within a category, so early signals can indicate whether a post will travel — but the ratios are category-specific and must be established from your own data.
Measurement
Measuring KOL campaigns
Four metrics carry most of the signal. Benchmarks are category-specific and move quickly, so set yours from your own campaigns rather than importing someone else's.
- Cost per reading (CPR)
- Spend divided by reads. The basic efficiency measure for reach-led campaigns.
- Cost per engagement (CPE)
- Spend divided by meaningful interactions. Usually a better predictor of consideration than CPR.
- Engagement rate
- Interactions against reach. The clearest read on whether a creator's audience actually cares, as opposed to merely existing.
- Viral post rate
- The share of posts that break out well beyond baseline. A creator with a high viral rate is worth more than one with a high average.
Frequently asked questions about Xiaohongshu
Does Xiaohongshu affect what AI says about my brand?
Indirectly but materially. Chinese AI engines draw on Chinese-language sources, and Xiaohongshu is a large, heavily-indexed part of how products are discussed in Chinese. A brand with no presence or a poor reputation there gives an engine little accurate material to work with when a Chinese-language question is asked. Tocanan measures both — XHS conversation and Chinese AI visibility — because they are connected.
Should I use a personal or business account?
Business accounts give you commerce features, analytics and paid tools. Personal-style accounts often read as more authentic and see stronger organic engagement. If your objective is direct sales, take the business account; if it is credibility and seeding, the trade-off is worth considering carefully.
What is 種草 (planting grass)?
The Chinese term for seeding desire for a product before a purchase decision has formed — a peer recommendation that makes someone want something. It matters commercially because that evaluation happens publicly and remains searchable, which is what makes it available to both other consumers and AI engines later.
Can Western social listening tools cover Xiaohongshu?
Generally not, or not well. Most are built for platforms with open APIs and Latin-script content. Coverage of XHS requires native-language capability and different data access, which is why it is usually the blind spot in an otherwise complete monitoring setup.
How does Tocanan work on Xiaohongshu?
We monitor XHS conversation as part of AI Social Listening, and we treat that presence as an input to Chinese AI visibility rather than as a separate channel. The two are measured together — what people say about you on XHS, and what DeepSeek, Kimi and Doubao then say about you.
